Creating an email for the first time can be a daunting task, as it’s difficult to know exactly where to start and what to include in the content. That’s why I’ve put together a list of top ten essential email marketing content ideas to get you started. The following suggestions should create a basis for your email marketing campaign, help you build a relationship with your customers and deliver some impressive results.
1) Pre-header- not everyone will open your email and read the entire contents, through heatmap analysis we have found that a fair few people open and click straight away. A pre-header is a summary of the reason you are sending the email. When viewed in an inbox it appears after the subject line, to give an indication of what the email is about before the reader opens it. It also acts as a click through straight to your website and adds to the recipient’s recognition of your brand. Adding in a pre-header can significantly improve open and click through rates.
2) Navigation- this is an essential part of any email campaign as clicks on the navigation are by far the most important ones. Navigation clicks show your customers know exactly what they’re looking for! Here at Red C we would recommend creating a secondary navigation within your email, giving your customers more opportunity to click through to your products or services. Make sure your navigation really stands out against the rest of your email creative.
3) The product or service- this is usually the most important message in your email, so make sure it sits within the ‘above the fold’ section of your email and include it in your introductory line. The email should then always be designed so that this is the most prominent message within your email.
4) Personalisation- there are variousways to ensure your email is personalised to the recipient – within the HTML sections of your email, you could include:
• first name
• surname
• age
• address
• the product they bought from you
• their nearest local store/shop
5) Dynamic content- this is a great way to increase your cross-selling opportunities and the relevance of your email. You can include the most appropriate product/ service for each customer. Just make sure your content is relevant, if you’re collecting the information about your customers you should know them pretty well!
6) Call to Actions- make sure all call to actions in your email are prominent, whether it’s a button or a telephone number – they can be included in the introductory line, the header panel, the body copy and then repeated at the bottom of the email. Make sure they are included wherever possible; every CTA creates another opportunity to click through to your website.
7) Include links in relevant places- it’s a proven fact that hyper links in HTML copy create incremental clicks, that’s why it’s essential to put links in the key hot-spot of your email and where recipients will logically expect to click. Doing this will increase the likelihood of your audience interacting with the email, improving the number of clicks and increasing the traffic to your site which will lead to more conversions.
8) Value added content- don’t just bombard your customers with product offers, include other content that they might be interested in such as links to social media, competitions, prize draws, games or fun and interesting facts. Give your customers rich and varied content on a regular basis, as they may not always be looking to buy the product you’re selling.
9) Improve deliverability- add a message at the top of your email that says something like, “To ensure you receive our emails, please add [email protected] to your Address Book.” Another way
